Six Chinese Warships Spotted Near Okinawa

Date Posted: 2011-12-02

Six Chinese warships have made another foray into Japan area waters, passing between the southern Japan islands of Okinawa and Miyako, according to a Defense Ministry source.

The fleet, comprising two destroyers, two frigates, one intelligence-gathering vessel and one tender, were moving toward the Pacific Ocean in the high seas some 100 kilometers northeast of Miyako Island last Tuesday morning and into early Wednesday. The ministry says a Chinese intelligence-gathering ship has rarely been spotted

A total of 11 Chinese naval ships crossed the same waterway back in June. They conducted target practice in the waters some 450 kilometers southwest of Okinotorishima, Japan's southernmost island. A defense official says the Chinese vessels also conducted other training exercises in the area.
