Onna Fishermen’s Association opposes PCB disposal plant

Date Posted: 2003-12-06

A planned Japanese Self Defense Air Force PCB disposal plant plan has run into stiff opposition from the Onna Village Fishermen’s Association.
The JASDF had planned to take association members on a tour to Hokkaido to see a similar disposal facility operating there, but the association has refused to participate.
Association Chairman Shigeru Kinjo said that the association is categorically opposed to building the facility at Onna Village, despite assurances from JASDF officials that the plant is safe. “You never know when an accident happens. JASDF officials claim that the plant would be completely safe, but if an accident happens, the damage to fish, ocean and the image of Onna Village would be completely destroyed. We don’t want such a facility here, they should build it somewhere else,” Kinjo said.
JASDF officials had planned to take a group of 28 people from Onna Village to the study tour to Muroran City in Hokkaido on Dec. 2. The group would have included Onna mayor, assembly members and village opinion leaders.
When the JASDF made its plan public, the Fishermen’s Association held an emergency meeting, and decided on its own to cancel the tour. It also urged other participants to cancel, although they haven’t so far.
The Fishermen’s Association’s fierce opposition of the plan is based on an incident in 1996 when a PCB leak in Onna Village created a scare among its members. The village residents earn their living from fishing and marine sports by tourists who are attracted to the many resorts in Onna because of its pristine white beaches and clean turquoise ocean.
