Guinness Record set at Ishigaki Beef Barbeque

Date Posted: 2011-12-02

It took Ishigaki residents five hours, but they set a new Guinness World Record for the longest Kushi-yaki, beef-on-a-stick, barbeque.

The occasion was a celebration at the site of the new Ishigaki City Airport, which is being built in the city’s Shiraho district and will open in two years. Some 15,000 citizens participated in the barbeque party, which involved skewering and grilling Ishigaki beef on a long metal pole that stretched 107.6 meters long. The new record was 10.1 meters longer than the 97.5 meters recorded by a group in Lebanon.

A total of 1,710 people or groups had challenged the standing world record that was exceeded by Ishigaki residents, with everyone participating. It began with placing 5cm square Ishigaki beef chunks on an iron stick one-by-one, then roasting the meat, letting it rest, then turning it upside down. The iron stick’s weld joints broke twice during the challenge, but both times were repaired. The final stage of the record requirement was eating the meat completely, and that was done in a feast that took five hours from start to finish.
