Truck driver rescues two boys from river in Yonashiro

Date Posted: 2003-12-06

A truck driver jumped into a river and rescued two eight-year-old boys who were drowning. One of the boys escaped an injury but the other remains hospitalized in coma.
Yonashiro Police say the two boys had gone fishing at the river, which runs about 170 cm deep. One of the boys caught a fish but it wiggled out of his hand and fell back into the river. Trying to recapture his catch, the boy fell from the bridge.
His friend then jumped after him to try to help.
The truck driver was passing by, saw the accident and stopped immediately. He also jumped into the river and managed to catch both boys and push them out of the river.
However, the heart of the boy who had fallen into the river first had stopped. The rescue team that arrived at the scene managed to restart his heart and he was taken to a hospital where he remains in coma. Doctors say it is too early for them to tell whether the boy has suffered any permanent brain damage.
