III MEF in Thailand to assist relief assessment operations

Date Posted: 2011-11-25

The III Marine Expeditionary Force Flood Relief Command Element is now in Thailand, working with and assisting the Royal Thai government in dealing with the country’s worst flooding in decades.

Directed to Thailand by the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, and by the U.S. Pacific Command, III MEF is conducting assessments for flood relief, recovery operations and to execute specific tasks associated with disaster mitigation. Officials say the Marines could be providing follow-on personnel, services and capabilities. The Command Element is responsible for providing command and control of all U.S. forces working with the local government.

III MEF says U.S. forces “remain committed to working with the Royal Government of Thailand, our long standing friends and allies during this challenging time.” A spokesman says “Joint U.S. forces from U.S. Pacific Command will coordinate with interagency partners to support and assist in flood recovery operations and disaster relief, with a specific emphasis on medical risk assessments and providing assistance to Thai engineering authorities on Bangkok’s flood mitigation systems.

Thailand continues to experience widespread flooding across the nation, with the central and northern provinces experiencing the worst flooding crisis in decades due to unexpected amounts of significant rainfall.
