Chinese cargo ship caught violating pollution law

Date Posted: 2011-11-25

A Chinese cargo ship has been stopped by the Japan Coast Guard within Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, and the crew admits dumping oil in violation of Japanese law.

The Jia Chang cargo vessel was stopped by the 11th Regional Coast Guard about 164 kilometers from Cape Kyan in Itoman, boarded and investigated. The crew admitted “we drained oil” as the vessel was sailing in Japanese waters, a violation of the Marine Pollution and Marine Disaster Prevention Law.

A patrolling aircraft belonging to the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters first spotted the cargo ship about 1:41 p.m., and an oil slick about 40 kilometers long was visible. The Jia Chang was en route from a harbor in Shanghai, heading to a destination in Australia.
