Newborn baby abandoned on a hospital doorstep

Date Posted: 2011-11-25

One of the latest patients admitted to the Okinawa Prefectural Nanbu Medical Treatment Center took an unconventional admission route; he was discovered abandoned and wrapped in a towel at the hospital’s employee entrance.

The 2:36 a.m. discovery Monday was made by a doctor, who called Yonabaru Police and a medical team. The baby boy was approximately ten hours old when discovered. He weighed 3,300 grams and was wrapped in white towels. “I think that the parent maybe chose the place that was easy to find by doctors because the temperature was falling, and it became cold,” said an investigator.

Yonabaru Police say a human figure that placed something white at the back entrance to the medical center was captured by a surveillance camera. Police are investigating the case as an aggravated abandonment crime. The entrance to the hospital where the baby boy was discovered is not easily visible, and the door is frosted glass. Fortunately, say police, it’s an entrance where many staff members are continuously going in and out.
