Rice Master teaches many ways to appreciate rice

Date Posted: 2011-11-18

There’s much more to rice than just boiling it and serving on a plate, says Nanako Toguchi.

Toguchi is a three-star Rice Master with a master’s degree that gives her plenty to talk about in explaining everything about rice from growing it to many ways to eat it. The Uruma City Rice Master has begun presenting his “Rice Power course by Rice Master” in the Katsuren Citizens’ Hall, under sponsorship of the Uruma City Katsuren Library.

The rice expert, who worked at Gushikawa Shokuryo, drew ooh’s and ahhh’s from parents and children who said “at first we were half in doubt, but the rice ball with potato chips was tasty.” That was in response to his explanations on simple ways to make a rice ball, and how to enjoy it in a Japanese diet. He delved into presenting garnishes to enhance the simple rice dishes, such as pouring soy sauce and dried bonito flakes on it, to mixing with cream cheese, or adding mayonnaise to broken potato chips as an ingredient in a rice ball.

“I will give the rice ball I made using cream cheese to my daughter for a picnic lunch,” said one of the parents attending the lecture. Toguchi says “It is important nutrition education not only eating, but also making food together with parents and children working together.” She adds “I want to spread rice power by varying ideas.”
