Music downloads lead to arrest on fraud charges

Date Posted: 2011-11-10

A 41-year-old unemployed contract employee is under arrest, charged with computer related fraud for illicitly downloading music files using another person’s credit card information.

Tsuyodhi Nakahashi of Furujima district in Naha was busted by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Cyber Crime Countermeasures Section. Investigators say Nakahashi obtained the names and credit card numbers of victims while working at the PC software support counter of a computer store. He’s charged with downloading 40 music titles worth ¥35,000 from a music distribution website using the credit card information of a woman in the Stagaya district of Tokyo in early June.

“I continued to download the music because it worked well at first,” Nakahashi told the Cyber Crime Section while admitting to the charges. He began using illegally obtained credit card information in January of last year, and is suspected of downloading 9,000 titles worth at least ¥5 million ($66,670). The company where Nakahashi had worked, CSK Service Ware, refused comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
