White Beach Festival brightens weekend

The U.S. Navy wants you to have a wonderful holiday weekend.

It wants you to visit White Beach and join in the festivities of its semi-annual White Beach Festival, which runs Saturday and Sunday. Organizers say itís the perfect way to cap the four-day Veterans Day holiday time off.

The festival opens at 11 a.m. Saturday with access to the base beginning shortly before, and the festivities winding down by 10pm. The White Beach Festival is open to everyone, island-wide.. Sunday the gates at the naval installation also open at 11 a.m., and the party goes until 10p.m. While the public is invited, security officials advise visitors not to bring backpacks or large handbags or diaper bags. Those items will draw scrutiny from organizers and security personnel.

Visitors are asked to bring photo identification such as a passport or driverís license for entry. Bags will be subject to search, and ice chests or beverage coolers, pets, skateboards and heeleys will not be allowed at the festival.

Entertainment will be nearly non-stop through the weekend as the festival planners want visitors to have a good time. Captain Rich Weathers, the, Commander Fleet Activities Okinawa, says thereís plenty to do during the festival, including banana boat rides, kiddyland, plenty of activities for families and children, tons of food, and games.

Foods cover the world. There are vendor booths offering a variety of foods from countries throughout Asia, as well as American and South American entrees.

Both known and new artists on Okinawa will be providing the entertainment, starting with the 7th Fleet and III Marine Expeditionary Force Bands both days. The bands kick off the entertainment from noon ~ 3 p.m. both days. Saturday afternoon features a Polynesian Dance at 4 p.m., Tenryu Taiko drum group at 6 p.m. and Coconut Telegraph on stage at 8 p.m. Sunday itís Ryukyu Buyo at 3:30 p.m., Double Shot at 5:15 p.m. and Porkyís providing the evening entertainment at 8 p.m.

Delta Airlines will be providing two $1,000 travel vouchers for those registering for a contest, and Samís Restaurants and others will also be giving away vouchers. Als sponsoring the White Beach Festival with MWR Okinawa are Southern Beach Hotel & Resorts Okinawa, the University of Phoenix, Balloon Man and I Love Okinawa.
