Awamori leads to arrest of Ishigaki City employee

Date Posted: 2011-11-10

An evening party at an izakaya has led to the arrest of an Ishigaki City staff member on charges of drunken driving.

The 44-year-old city employee has admitted “I drank awamori and beer with my friends” and then drove his car on national road 390 in Ishigaki City. Police say Atayuki Niimoto’s blood alcohol level at the time of his arrest was four times the limit.

Cops found Niimoto after he crashed his car into a stopped taxi. The taxi driver was not injured. Masahiro Kanna, Ishigaki City’s deputy mayor, has apologized, telling the community “it is a pity to lose trust from citizens, and we apologize about that.” Kanna has pledged a renewed effort to promote better conduct from city employees to prevent further incidents.
