C1 Gourmet Battle about to begin in Chatan

Date Posted: 2011-11-10

The question to be answered is “which is the #1 local gourmet restaurant in Chatan?”

Resolution to the question comes this weekend with a two-day C1 Gourmet Battle pitting dozens of Chatan restaurants in competition with each other for the honor, and with some 2,500 people expected to do the taste testing and casting votes to settle the matter. The action takes place in front of the Mihama Baseball park this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. ~ 5 p.m.

Creative, Communication and Chatan are behind the “C”, and of course, the 1 means number one. The unique competition isn’t drawing formal menus such as are found in hotel or high-class restaurants, with the focus of the entrants being local ingredients and taste. Last year nearly 2,500 people turned out for the Gourmet Battle, awarding the 2010 C1 prize to a Beef Omelet produced by Double Decker located in Depot Island. It went so well, says the Association of Tourists in Chatan, that organized last year’s event, that “Okinawans are so interested in gourmet foods that we decided to plan a second battle this autumn season.

Organizers promise this weekend’s event is “becoming more upscale this time, and we can promote the Chatan gourmet scene to Japan and the world. That’s creative power for Chatan!”

The entrants will each have a booth, and visitors attending the event can purchase a ¥1,000 ticket at the entrance. The ticket can be used in ¥100 increments to taste the foods at each booth. The portions are smaller, about half the size of the dishes found in the restaurants, giving participants ample opportunity to try a lot of foods. When purchasing the ticket, chopsticks are also given. At the end, patrons deposit the chopsticks in the box for their favorites. The most chopsticks win.

Free parking is available in front of the Aeon Shopping Center in Chatan, adjacent to the Mihama Baseball Park.
