Ie Villager hands over ammunition cartridges

Date Posted: 2011-11-10

A man living in northern Okinawa’s Ie Village has handed over to police several hundred pieces of apparent military cartridges.

Motobu Police say the 37-year-old villager walked into the Kawahira Police Substation surrendered the pieces of what appeared to be cartridges without bullets, telling officers he found them linked with a belt or sash at a Nishie-mae district seashore site.

An investigation is under way, and Motobu Police say there’s a good chance the cartridges are blanks used for rifle training. They’ve asked the U.S. military to examine the cartridges, which police say appear unused.
