Season’s first Christmas lights are now flashing

Date Posted: 2011-11-04

It may seem a bit early for Christmas to hit Okinawa, when temperatures are still in the 27C range, but it actually has happened.

The season’s first Christmas lights –all 18,000 of them—are flashing on the Houou-Boku trees that line Okiei Street in Naha City. The Okiei Street Shopping Mall Promotion Association fired up the Christmas illuminations carrying the words “The Fastest in Okinawa” on Saturday evening.

The colorful lights will stay illuminated until the end of January. The Okiei Street Shopping Mall Promotion Association says it couldn’t wait for the holiday spirit to begin, and shoppers and local residents seemed to agree. There was plenty of hand-clapping when the lights came on, and one little girl broke into a big smile and said “very beautiful”.
