New lawsuit seeks noise damages from Kadena

Date Posted: 2011-11-04

A new lawsuit, the third filed by residents of Kadena Town, is seeking ¥44.6 billion in damages for noise caused by nighttime flights by American military jets.

Some 22,000 residents who live near the sprawling U.S. Kadena Air Base contend that the noise is disrupti. ng sleep in roughly 7,500 households, and causing them to have hearing disorders. They’re asking that the Naha District Court ban nighttime flights and award damages.

The first lawsuit was filed by 900 citizens in 1982, and a second by 5,500 in 2000. The court awarded damages to the plaintiffs in both cases, but refused to order a halt to the night flights by American military aircraft.
