Toys ‘R Us hit with fines for violating Antimonopoly law

Date Posted: 2011-11-04

The American Toys ‘R Us company has been ordered to pay massive surcharges totaling hundreds of millions of yen for violating the country’s Antimonopoly Law.

The Fair Trade Commission confirmed its ruling this week that the company had abused its superiority position in the marketplace by unfairly discounting payments to suppliers of toys and baby goods. Toys ‘R Us reportedly forced its suppliers to accept steep unilateral discounts, and has been ordered to pay returns to them.

Toy’s R Us Japan, in a statement, acknowledges receiving the Fair Trade Commission’s edict, but says “we are not in a superiority position, and there was not action that abuses unfairly our position on trade.” The Commission says Toys ‘R Us had been unfairly demanding discounts to organize discount sales in its stores since 2009.
