Bullet holes in road signs puzzle Nago cops

Date Posted: 2011-10-28

The two centimeter holes in signs first began appearing in the greater Nago City area a year ago, but police say more of the holes are showing up in road signs in the same area.

The 2cm diameter holes have most recently been found on a woodland path in the Kayou district of the city, with several cartridges dropped nearby. The spot is in a hunting area in a forest about 600 meters from Highway 329. Police say the Okinawa Prefecture Hokubu Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Promotion Center staff first began seeing the holes in October 2010, but never reported them.

Center staff on patrol found the bullet-hole like damage in other places in the Kayou and Iso areas near Kunigami Village. Officials have ruled out the bullet holes coming from the U.S. military, noting that the nearest American base, Camp Schwab, is some 20 kilometers away. Nago City Police say they’ve been checking the area now, noting that the cartridges found near the holes may or may not have been the cause of the holes.

The holes in the Iso district road signs are about 8mm, with marks that appear to have caused the damage from front to back. The Okinawa Prefecture Hokubu Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Promotion Center staff has been directed to file reports with police.
