Young student falls into Kokuba River and drowns

Date Posted: 2011-10-28

A six-year-old Kokura elementary school student playing along the banks of the Kokuba River in Naha City slipped and fell, and drowned.

Kouya Kudaka had been playing with two fellow students along the river at Madanbashi in the Kokura district of Naha city, trying to catch crabs, when he lost his balance and slid into the water. One of his playmates asked a passer-by to call119 to Tomigusuku City Fire Department headquarters to report “My friend fell into the river and I can’t find him” at 2:21 p.m., sending firefighters to the scene.

Firemen recovered the youngster from a 1.5-meter-deep stretch of water, but he was unconscious. He died an hour later at a nearby hospital. The accident took place along the river near a road with a crash barrier, near a slope covered with concrete. Police are investigating exactly how the accident happened.
