School board disciplines four educators for drunk driving

Date Posted: 2011-10-28

Four educators have been punished for drunk driving by superiors at the Okinawa Prefecture Board of Education following their arrests.

The 53-year-old deputy head of Nago City’s Yabe Junior High School was dismissed in disgrace by the board. Hayashi Shimabukuro had been arrested in September on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. A 45-year-old Okinawa Prefecture Office of Education supervisor has been suspended for six months after being convicted of drunk driving and violating rules of a designated passing lane. That incident also took place in September.

A 39-year-old teacher from one of Okinawa’s outer islands was also disciplined for drunk driving. The fourth educator, a 29-year-old substitute teacher, was drunk after drinking ten glasses of beer at a friend’s wedding party in September, after which he exposed the lower part of his body in a park. The teacher was suspended for five months and 11 days, until the end of the term.

Hiroshi Oshiro, the chairman of the Okinawa Prefectural Board of Education, said “the cases should not occur to people who take part in education.” The prefecture’s top educator promised “we will immediately work out relapse prevention planning, such as building up and complete service guidance” to avoid future incidents.
