Mother charged after her newborn baby found dead

Date Posted: 2011-10-21

A 33-year-old mother has been arrested and charged with abandoning a body after police discovered she left the baby’s body shortly after the boy was born.

Misuzu Nagamine of Chatan Town’s Kuwae district admits doing it, telling police “I gave birth to the boy but it was a stillbirth. It’s safe to bet I’m guilty of the abandonment.” Okinawa police are now conducting a judicial autopsy to determine the cause of death, and is simultaneously investing details surrounding the death.

Police say Nagamine abandoned the baby’s body sometime after 3 p.m. on October 12th. A man who had relations with Nagamine and who had visited the woman in her home is the one who made the call to police about 3 a.m. last Friday to report the incident. When police arrived, they discovered the baby’s body covered with a bath towel.

The mother was present, police say, adding they didn’t see any marks or injuries on the baby’s body. Okinawa Police are investigating both the cause of death and the blood relationship with Nagamine while they search for the baby’s father. The woman lives together with her two children, a junior high school age daughter and a high school age daughter.
