Japan Women’s Open slips from Mika Miyazato’s hands

Date Posted: 2011-10-14

Mika Miyazato scored a piece of the first round lead at the Japan Women’s Open in Togo, Aichi Prefecture, but couldn’t hold on, falling to Yukari Baba, who won her first major title.

Baba shot a 6-under-76 in the final round to score 292, the second worst winning score in the Japan Ladies Professional Golf Association’s history, at the Nagoya Golf Club’s Wago Course. Defending champion Mika Miyazato tallied a par performance in the first round to share the lead, but scored a horrible 81 to finish 21 over with a share of 20th place.

Fellow Okinawan Ai Miyazato, a U.S. LPGA star, was a contender for the Japan title for most of the final round, before falling apart in the last seven holes, shooting seven bogies. She would up in sixth place with a 76, 15 strokes off the pace.
