Residential fire kills an elderly occupant

A fast-moving fire swept through a two-story wooden home in Naha City, destroying the building and killing an 88-year-old resident.

Naha City firefighters responded quickly to the 6 a.m. blaze, which was spotted by a neighbor in the Makishi district, extinguishing the flames within an hour. It was too late for the victim, whom police investigators believe is Toshi Shimoji, who lived in the house.

Police say the fire appears to have started on the second floor of the residence, which sits on a residential street lined by wooden houses. The victimís 54-year-old son, who lives in the same home, escaped the fire with only facial burns. Heís been taken to a local hospital, where heís in satisfactory condition.

Naha City Police say a one-story home next door to the destroyed structure also caught fire, but suffered only minor damage.
