26-year-old drunk driver causes accident, kills woman

Date Posted: 2003-11-21

A small truck driven by a 26-year-old restaurant worker went out of control on Hwy 330 in Urasoe City, Saturday. The driver of the truck was drunk at the time of the accident.

According to Urasoe Police, the man was driving south towards Naha about 8:20 a.m. when he tried to pass another truck in heavy morning traffic. As he speeded up, the truck in front of him did the same, trying to pass another car in front of them both. The restaurant worker’s truck first hit the other truck in the back and then smashed into the medium guardrail. It then went over the divider on the opposing lane and turned over.

The other truck also crashed into an oncoming car driven by a woman. The woman was taken to a hospital, but she died shortly afterwards of severe chest injuries. The driver of the other truck suffered minor back and neck injury. The driver who caused the accident had several ribs broken, and internal injuries that will take about two month’s stay in the hospital to heal.

The accident caused a massive traffic jam as only one lane remained open to both directions. It took more than two hours before the jam was cleared. Urasoe Police say that the drunken driver was solely responsible the accident.
