Woman dies while diving for octopus

Date Posted: 2011-10-07

A 66-year-old self-employed woman has died while diving in open waters at Anjuzaki at Minatogawa in Urasoe City.

Urasoe Police first received a 110 call that “a friend who went diving with me hasn’t come out of the water”. The 2:10 a.m. call from a 55-year-old woman brought the Urasoe Fire Department Headquarters Rescue Team and the 11th Regional Coast Guard into action, searching the area. A fire department diver found the woman in cardiopulmonary arrest on the ocean floor, about 100 meters from shore, at 5:05 a.m.

The victim, Kayoko Nakazato of Urasoe City’s Uchima district, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Nakazato was fishing for octopus in the open waters at the time she disappeared.
