Granny of steel enjoys running trim marathons

Date Posted: 2003-11-21

An 85-year-old Urasoe City woman, Kiyo Miyazato, says that age is no reason to stop caring for ones physical health. To prove her point she recently ran the 5-kilometer course of Chubu Trim Marathon becoming the oldest person to participate.

Miyazato says she loves to run. I did not get started before I was 70, but I have entered more than 15 races since, she states. She says that she runs every day at Urasoe Athletic Park, unless the weather is bad or there is some special occasion.

She says that running is natural for her. I lost my husband during the Battle of Okinawa. We had three children and I had to care for them alone. I was selling product at Naha Citys Heiwa Dori market place and those days I walked from Urasoe to Naha and back every day. I carried my produce in a basket on top of my head and I had my youngest child on my back. Running a race in running shoes and sports outfit is nothing compared to that, Miyazato testified. She adds that she plans to run many years to come. My legs and body are still in perfect condition, and I truly enjoy this, she says.
