Yaese Town regroups with new commercial development planDate Posted: 2011-09-23 The Yaese Town move was the first under Okinawa regulations requiring district planning decisions to be made in accordance with stringent development master plans. San-A is the first to announce building a facility in the Kochinda Plaza area. An official familiar with the plan says he expects San-A to build a large shopping center in Yaese Town, a first for the town. The shopping area “will be connected to an extension of employment and increases in tax revenues for Yaese Town. Only 9.1% of Yaese Town’s land is available for development. Of the former Kochinda district, 1,344 hectares is designated as an urbanization regulation area where Yaese Town has no say-so on development. That rule has up-until-now kept companies from building a large shopping center that sells clothes and other ‘necessities’ in Yaese Town. The Okinawa Prefecture Shopping Trend Research Office reports that the situation has caused 90% of Yaese Town’s population to have to do their shopping away from their residential areas. The new shopping center’s size hasn’t been decided, but San-A officials hint it should be equal to the size of shopping centers such as Shiozaki City in Itoman, or Oyama City in Ginowan. A San-A spokesman says the new shopping center will be open in autumn 2012, at the earliest. |
