Mihama announces plans for Halloween costume contestDate Posted: 2011-09-23 ![]() A year ago, 576 participants competed in the 4th Annual Halloween Festival, with the costume contest the core event. The number of junior ghosts and goblins surprised even the organizers, who in 2009 had seen fewer than 400 participate. The event will again be held October 31st from 6 p.m. ~ 8 p.m., with registration starting at 2 p.m. The Halloween Mihama 2011 Costume Contest will be held on a blocked-off street just past the ferris wheel, toward the beach at Mihama American Village in Chatan Town. A new feature this year is online registration for the costume contest, and it can be done anytime. Interested contestants should log on to http://www.okinawa-americanvillage.com/the-halloween-mihama2011-english/. The main event in this 5th annual event is for kids 13 years of age and older, all vying for ten prizes that include a 1st prize of $500, 2nd prize of $300, and a $150 third prize. Fourth through tenth place prizes are merchandise from Mihama American Village sponsors. Competition again will be divided into children up to age 12, as well as the older grouping. For the younger generation, 1st prize will be a Super Jumbo Box of assorted candies, the 2nd prize a Jumbo Box, 3rd prize a Big Box, and 4th ~ 10th prizes assorted candies. The Halloween Mihama 2011 Costume Contest and the Halloween Festival are sponsored by the Mihama American Village Tenants, the Chatan Tourist Association, and the Chatan Mihama American Village Jigyosha Kai as a cultural exchange event between Okinawa and the United States. Teruro Okuhara, chairman of the Chatan Mihama American Village Jigyosha Kai, has extended a participation invitation to the entire U.S. military community, saying “all are welcome for the festival itself, and for the costume contest,” which has prizes at stake. Mihama American Villages shops and stores join in the October 31st festivities with sales, discounts, freebies and trick-or-treat activities for the kids. |
