Camp Kinser to open gates to local community

Date Posted: 2011-09-17

The Okinawa festival season extends next weekend to Camp Kinser in Urasoe City, where Marine Corps Community Services Okinawa will open the base doors to the local community, as well as to SOFA status personnel, for two days of fun and frolic. The festival was postponed by one week to Sep. 24-25 because of a threat of inclemental weather caused by Tropical Storm Roke.

The Kinser Festival has plenty of things going on for all ages, as it operates this year from the Camp Kinser warehouse area. The festival is open both days from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. There’s plenty of free, top-notch entertainment, game booths, amusement rides, Kiddie Land for children and enough cultural foods to appease the heartiest appetite.

Saturday’s entertainment lineup starts with a give away and welcoming ceremonies at 3 p.m., followed at 4 p.m. by Clown Kotora’s show. The Ryukyu Kirara Okinawa traditional dance begins at 4:35 p.m., followed by Streetbeat variety band at 5:30 p.m. The evening’s clock full of dance with Cawa Winners rock dance, Triple Monkey break dance, Flare Stack free style and house dance, Claverio salsa pair dance, Yuki & What’s UP Akemi and T-da Crew hip-hop.

On Sunday, give away time again starts the stage activity at 3 p.m., followed by Ryukyu Matsuri Daiko Okinawa Eisa at 3:40 p.m. Deal or No Deal is at 4:30 p.m., followed by an exhibition dance battle Street Dance Okinawa at 5:15 pm. Street Beat variety band performs at 6:30 p.m., setting the stage for American R & B band Joe at 8:15 p.m.

American bands Crowning Pool and Joe that were originally scheduled to highlight the festival will perform in free concerts instead. Drowning Pool is going to appear at The Palms on today (Sat., Sep. 17th) at 8:00pm. Joe will be performing at Ocean Breeze on tomorrow on Sunday, September 18th at 8 pm.

Ten lucky contestants will participate in a round of Okinawa’s version of the popular television game show Deal or No Deal Sunday at 3 p.m., vying for chances to win a grand prize of round-trip tickets for two to any United Airlines gateway city, and a travel voucher courtesy of United Airlines and Omega World Travel. Other prizes to be awarded are a Bubbles custom-made wetsuit, a two-night stay at Club Med on Ishigaki Island, an overnight stay at the Beach Tower Okinawa, and BMW apparel. A full list of prizes is online at www.mccsokinawa.com/clubs.

The foods include a few MCCS originals such as jumbo turkey legs, happy burgers, freshly-baked Mamma Mia’s Pizza, as well as Nathan’s famous six-inch and foot-long hot dogs. Local favorites such as funnel cake, yakitori, and yakisoba will also be available. No pets, outside alcohol, bottles, coolers or large backpacks are permitted at the Kinser Festival.
