Nago City JHS teacher busted for DUI violation

Date Posted: 2011-09-16

Hayashi Shimabukuro has confessed to violating the Japanese Road Traffic Law by driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Nago City Yabu Junior High School teacher was arrested at 6:20 a.m. Saturday on a road in Nago City’s Ominami district. Nago Police say a patrolman became suspicious about a car driving on the street’s center line, so stopped it to question the driver. Shimabukuro tested at triple the legal allowable alcohol level.

A Yabu Junior High School official says Shimabukuro had started drinking beer and awamori at an izakaya in Nago City about 7:30 p.m. Friday evening while participating in a welcoming party for newly appointed teachers. Some 20 people, including the principal of Shuri Junior High School, were participating in the welcome party.

Shimabukuro and 3-4 other teachers left the party about 10 p.m. ~ 11 p.m., and Shimabukuro moved to another Izakaya, where he continued to drink for another seven hours. Shuri Junior High School Principal Takao Tomoyose said “I didn’t see Shimabukuro off outside the Izakaya, so I don’t know what happened after that. I thought he’d called a taxi.”
