Pedestrian crossing Hwy 58 hit by minicar, killed

Date Posted: 2011-09-09

A 58-year-old housewife is dead after being struck by a car while she crossed Highway 58 in Ginowan City.

Ginowan Police say Shizue Otsubo was crossing the highway Saturday morning in the city’s Oyama district when she was hit by a car driven by a 30-year-old female restaurant employee from Chuo, Okinawa City. Otsubo hit her head on the pavement and was taken to a hospital with a cerebral contusion. She died later in the day at the hospital.

Police say Otsubo was walking across the third traffic lane on Highway 58, in the northbound lane, when she was struck. The mini-car driver told police she saw Otsubo, who was crossing the street, but her reaction was delayed because of a failure to look ahead. The woman driver said she stepped on the brakes, but not in time.
