Virus killing carps nationwide, first case reported in Oki

Date Posted: 2003-11-21

A mystery virus is killing carp and other fish in the nationís ponds and streams. The first cases were reposted on the mainland about four months ago, and the number has now reached over 6,000.

The first case in Okinawa was reported two weeks ago when a large number of dead carp was discovered in the upper end of Hija River that runs through Chibana and Kadena Town. Last week, the contamination had spread to the lower side of the Chibana Bridge where over 1,000 fish were found floating.

Officials from the Okinawa Prefecture Welfare and Health Center took samples of the dead fish, but so far they are as mystified as their counterparts in other parts of Japan for reasons of how the disease spreads or what causes it.
