Okinawa International School celebrates its 10th anniversary

Date Posted: 2011-09-09

It was a big day as Okinawa International School gathered students, alumni, parents, friends and supporters to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and a far cry from opening day when the school was launched with a minimal staff and only 12 students.

Today, Okinawa International School is the only International Baccalaureate School in Okinawa, its enrollment continues to grow, and founder Masato Chinen smiles as he looks ahead to the coming school year when OIS expands its wings once more to encompass a Middle Years Programme for junior high school students.

Actor Agnes Chan was on hand for the anniversary celebration, speaking on the necessity of students being bilingual in order to be more effective in adult life. She promoted the IB programís international perspective as being the key to students opening themselves to new culture. Chanís raised her children in an international environment, and explained to guests the difference it makes in kidsí memories.

Okinawa International School first operated from a former day-care center building, reaching out to create kindergarten and elementary school curriculum with an English-language environment. The school moved to its current location in Naha, near Kohagura Crossing, in 2005. OIS currently has classes for children from 1-2 years of age through 6th grade. The elementary program is under the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

The school expands to a Junior High School Department next spring, offering the Middle Years Programme from IB, a continuation of the IB Primary Years Program. OIS has been working with the Japanese public education system and the Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to be sure students have the best possible education.
