O.C.E.A.N . Clean Beach Challenge coming up 17thDate Posted: 2011-09-09 ![]() The project sponsored by Okinawa O.C.E.A.N., the Okinawa Ocean Culture and Environment Action Network, Ocean Conservancy, the 11th Division Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard Okinawa Clean Coast Network and TEVA.com’s “A Foot for a Pair” initiative, will conduct the cleanup throughout the day at Cape Maeda, and cap the afternoon with a barbeque from 4 p.m. ~ 6 p.m. The event’s all part of the 26th annual International Coastal Cleanup, which with PADI Project A.W.A.R.E., the ICC underwater partner, has a Facebook challenge going to turn out 11,111 registered volunteers and 1,111 supporters on the beach. Organizer Edo Sanchez says “everyone can participate, and sponsors are welcome. Start a Clean Beach Club in your area and collect valuable Marine Debris Data, then enjoy the clean beach with friends and family.” The focus shifts to the website, http://www.signuptocleanup.org for English, and http://www.okinawaocean.org for Japanese and bilingual support. The September 17th event will find volunteers tackling trach that’s choking the cavern areas around Cape Paeda’s prime tourist attraction ‘The Blue Cave’, with help from dive boats and fishermen from Shioya Port. TEVA will be providing crews with special rugged water footwear for a safe and efficient cleanup in the uneven limestone terrain, and the crew will be shuttling the trash out to a boat. A day later, on September 18th, the Naha Clean Beach Club will be working a cleanup at Senaga Island in Tomigusuku City from 10 a.m. ~ noon. The public’s support is being sought for that activity, too. Additional information is available from kiyan@okinawaocean.org. |
