Prime Minister chooses a DPJ Secretary General

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda wasted no time selecting men for key Democratic Party of Japan positions, turning to both a defeated rival and an Ozawa ally for the spots.

Azuma Koshiishi, a veteran upper house of the Diet lawmaker, was picked to be the DPJ Secretary General. He’s an ally of Ichiro Ozawa, a lawmaker himself and influential party figure.

Noda turned to former foreign minister Seiji Maehara, who he defeated in the DPJ presidential election process, to be the party’s policy research chief. Former Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirofumi Hirano was tapped to be the DPJ’s Diet affairs chief.

The new Prime Minister’s actions are fulfilling a post-campaign promise to heal and unite the often-divided DPJ. Koshiishi had served as deputy to Ozawa when he was DPJ Secretary General, and now advocates lifting Ozawa’s party membership suspension to further heal the rifts within the party.
