Construction crew causes acid leak into ocean

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

A construction crew removing a tank at a metal plating plant made a mistake, causing some 300~500 liters of acid to flow into the sea.

The Nakagusuku Coast Guard Office is investigating the incident in which the hydrochloric acid was allowed to flow into the sea while the tank at Okinawa Galva was being changed out. Officials say the surrounding sea changed color to red over a 100-meter radius from the site of the leak.

Okinawa Galva officials reported the leak to the Coast Guard about 4:15 p.m. last Wednesday, about five hours after the incident occurred. The company also reported the accident to the local city fire department, the fishermen’s cooperative and to public offices. Coast Guard officials say no Okinawa beaches were damaged by the hydrochloric acid spill.
