A Jasmine massage is more than Thai massage

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

The crème de la crème of Thai traditional massage is an experience to be appreciated, and Jasmine Massage is the only place on Okinawa where genuine Thai massage is truly a Thai atmosphere encounter.

For starters, each of Jasmine’s masseuses are graduates of the Royal Temple, Wat Po Traditional Medical School in Bangkok, one of that country’s best known and most respected schools. Most everyone has heard of Thai massage, and some have undergone the combinations of stretching, Indian yoga and Chinese acupuncture that leave the recipient feeling en

To really understand massage, an appreciation of Thai massage as an integral part of Thai culture, is a must. Thai massage is thought to have evolved more than 2,500 years ago, originating in India before making the trek to Thailand, connecting with Buddhism from China. Thai massage is more than simple manipulation of muscles, because Thai masseuses are taught that 72,000 channels or streams of invisible life energy lines run through the human body.

Thai massage focuses on the ten major lines, known as Zen lines. Thai massage stimulates and enhances the flow of life energy, increasing blood and lymph circulation through pressure and the gentle stretching of muscles. It’s more than a hands-on massage though, as Thai masseuses use their elbows, thumbs, palms, knees and feet as the massage progresses. Jasmine’s massages traditionally last two hours, although shorter 60 and 90—minute regimens are available.

It all begins at Jasmine with a foot-washing session, gentle bathing in herbal scented water before the patron dons loose fitting pajamas for the massage. The masseuse begins at the toes and gradually works up the legs, hips, back, shoulders, neck and finally the head. It’s the touching, prodding and massaging through the Zen lines that relieves stiffness.

When it’s over, customers find themselves without stress, able to achieve deep relaxation with stretched muscles. Jasmine says “there’s nothing like a Thai massage to melt away tension and smooth the shoulders brought tight from using computers.” A herbal tea gives the patron time to bask in the afterglow of the ultimate muscle relaxation brought about by the Thai massage. Jasmine says visitors to Thailand rarely miss the Thai massage experience while in the Land of Smiles, and “nobody should pass the opportunity while here in Okinawa.”

Jasmine also offers foot massages, as well as aroma oil massage and steamed herbal compresses using natural herbs wrapped in cloth bags called herb balls. Jasmine offers original Gift Certificates, which “are an ideal present for birthdays and anniversaries.”

Jasmine is open daily except Wednesdays, 11 a.m. ~ 8 p.m. Appointments are available at 090-2969-4744.

Jasmine is located on the first floor of Ameku Apartments, adjacent to Lawson’s at Ojana in Ginowan City. Jasmine is about 1.7km south along the ‘Pipeline’ from Futenma Marine Corps Air Station main gate. Take Route 58 south toward Naha from the bases. After seeing Jimmy’s on the left, make a left turn at the fourth traffic signal, the one with the big Sharp sign on the corner. Then turn right at the single blinking red light and continue straight until the road curves to the left. Look for Jasmine on the corner adjacent to Lawson’s.
