Navel Kadena is sold to an Okinawa group

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

A local business group has purchased the land and buildings of Navel Kadena from a Tokyo-based group, pledging to transform the aging shopping center into a community-oriented facility.

Takaharu Tabata, president of Tabata Company of Uruma City, operates home centers. He says the company, which purchased Navel Kadena from Kenedix Company of Tokyo, intends on transforming the property, which now has ten empty shops, to a community-oriented type facility, such as a direct sale store for local agricultural products. “We want to serve outlets which support local industry, something like Michi-no-Eki, and not make shops that compete with other cities, towns and villages.

As the home center business at Navel Kadena is operated by another company, Tabata says he plans direct management of restaurants and local fish and shellfish shops, and will also strive to attract new businesses to the complex. Kou’s Navel Kadena branch, a Daiei-affiliated company, was closed in August 2002 and anchor tenant Toys-R-Us moved to Okinawa City’s Takahara district in March 2003.

Still operating in Navel Kadena are Home Center Kanehide, Maruei and Miyawaki book store. Home Center Tabata began the enterprise in 1985, expanding its operations with stores in Urasoe and Ishikawa Cities, where it operates with both agricultural sales locations and restaurants.
