Jet fighters draw attention in two Kadena incidents

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

A jet fighter made an emergency landing at Kadena Air Base, while another was sidelined on a runway parking area with a fuel leak.

U.S. Air Force officials have confirmed that fluids leaked from a F-15 fighter aircraft as it stood on a runway parking area at Kadena. Firemen covered the ground with absorption sheet surrounding the F-15 and collected the leaking substance within a half-hour. There was no fire.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the base, an FA-18 Hornet based at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni made an emergency landing with a 250-kilogram load of MK-82 rounds. Observers say the aircraft stood on the taxiway near Prefectural Road 74 for nearly an hour after landing at 10:39 a.m. When the plane had taken off from Kadena at 9:48 a.m., it was reportedly loaded with 500kg laser guided missiles and the MK-82 rounds.

When the plane made the emergency landing, it had only the MK-82 rounds, apparently having airdropped the guided missiles at bombing ranges near the Okinawa mainland. The military provided no explanations as to why the FA-18 made the emergency landing.
