Eisa, sushi go hand-in-hand in Chatan

Date Posted: 2011-09-02

It’s a unique combination; sushi and Eisa dance while you enjoy dinner at Sushi House Ryukyu in Chatan Town.

The newly opened sushi house on Highway 23, Kokutai Street, features a full menu of traditional sushi, plus a good many never heard of before because they’ve named after Okinawan families. A ‘Ganaha Roll’ or ‘Gushiken Roll’ are readily available, or a customer can create his or her own by specifying exactly what they’d like.

Ryudo Toguchi, the manager of Sushouse Ryukyu, spent four years in California learning the art of California-style sushi, before venturing off to Myanmar, where he opened “Sushi & Cocktail Ryukyu.” The Myanmar sushi house raised public interest and quickly became a favorite of embassy employees and the locals, but Toguchi’s heart yearned for Okinawa.

And then there’s the dance. Evenings at Sushi House Ryukyu finds the staff brushing aside the aprons to entertain guests with genuine Eisa dance numbers. Toguchi says the caliber of Eisa performances is high, because his employees practice every day. The Eisa dance performances are spontaneous; you’ve simply got to be there.

The new sushi house is open 11:30 a.m. ~ 2 p.m. for a buffet style luncheon. At least 6-7 kinds of sushi are offered, along with side menus. The lunch buffet is ¥1,350.

A drawing card is the creation of original sushi. A customer’s creation is given his name, and if it becomes popular, is added to the Sushi House Ryukyu’s regular menu.

Sushi House Ryukyu reopens at 5 p.m. daily as a sushi bar, operating until 10 p.m. Draft beer’s served for ¥200 per glass during September. As an additional incentive, tell the staff “I saw the Japan Update story” and a free California Roll is served, one per group.
Sushi House Ryukyu is located next to Starbucks Coffee on Kokutai Street. Take out services are offered. Both Japanese yen and U.S. dollars are accepted. Free parking is available.
