Miyazato blows chance at Canadian Women’s Open

Date Posted: 2011-08-31

Ai Miyazato fired a five-over-par final round at the LPGA Canadian Women’s Open, blowing her share of a third round lead to wind up tied for 16th.

The Higashi Village native had gone into the final round of the $2.25 million tournament in Montreal, Canada tied with defending champion Michelle Wie and Korean-American Tiffany Joh at the top of the leader board Sunday, only to shoot a disastrous 18 holes to finish with a 77 for the round and 281 for the tournament. She took home $30,158 for her 16th place finish.

American Brittany Lincicome, who trailed Miyazato by a stroke entering the final stanza, finished 2 under par for the round to take home first place and $337,500. Stacy Lewis and Michelle Wie finished tied for second, while Okinawan Mika Miyazato finished with a strong 3 under par 69 Sunday to finish tied for 18th.

Ai Miyazato was worried going into the final round, telling reporters she’d “played all right” on Saturday, but was concerned about the battle to control her emotions and knowing that avoiding mistakes was crucial. Sometimes “it’s difficult to control yourself,” she said, noting “you need to be patient out there. It’s tough to make the balance.”
