Alleged fuel incident at Kadena stirs remediation demands

Date Posted: 2011-08-19

Reports that light fuel oil was blown from a fuel tank at Kadena Air Base during Typhoon Muifa is raising questions about the military’s responsibilities for reporting and remediating the spill.

The alleged incident took place August 6th, leding the General Manager of the Okinawa General Bureau to visit both the Okinawa Defense Bureau and Kadena Air Base to demand actions be taken to prevent such accidents, even during natural disasters. Fumiaki Nakada’s visit brought insistence the military take appropriate steps to not only report incidents, but to insure suitable treatment of soil include testing for oil. Nakada also wants the military to publish results of testing and remediation.

The commander of the 18th facility group, Bryan Duffy, responded to the Okinawa Defense Bureau’s head of the planning division, Haruo Morita .

According to Okinawa prefecture, Bryan Duffy said the military would make an effort to provide early reports, but refused to commit to action about treatment of soil, saying “We will consider this after consulting with our superiors.”
