Date Posted: 2011-08-17

Okinawas Ai Miyazato, who last month won the Evian Masters golf tournament has donated more than half of her prize money to earthquake relief in Japan.

Miyazato has told followers Ive donated 20 million yen to the people affected by the earthquake from what I won at the Evian Masters last month. The Okinawa native picked up $487,500, some ¥37.5 million with the win. The Evian Masters was her second straight Evian win, her first victory of the season and seventh career U.S. LPGA Tour title.

The Higashi Village native has special ties to eastern Japan. Miyazato went to high school in Sendai, one of the cities nearest to the epicenter of the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. I hope to continue making this kind of donation, she says. I know many athletes have visited the quake-hit areas, and I haven't had a chance yet, but I plan to be there for the Miyagi TV Cup Dunlop Ladies Open

The Miyagi TV Cup is slated for Rifu, in Miyagi Prefecture, the 23rd through 25th of September. I dont know what I can do for the people because Ill be there for the tournament, but I'll try to play my golf and play well for them, she adds.
