Mainland Japanese think awamori is healthyDate Posted: 2002-12-21 According to Tokyo Awamori Association Chairman, Meiji University Professor Meguo Momose, 60 percent of those who answered the survey considered awamori a healthy drink. 36 percent of people said that the smell of awamori is good, and another 56 percent said its rather good or normal. Only 3.4 percent said that the smell is not good. 35 percent said that they learned about awamori while traveling to Okinawa. 25.6 percent had found awamori through radio, TV or newspapers. 22.9 percent had tasted it first in an Okinawan restaurant and the rest had been introduced by a friend. Although awamori has a healthy image 78.5 percent say it’s too strong. 34.5 percent say it’s a drink especially suitable for aged people. The Tokyo Awamori Association plans to use the survey to create an official awamori drinker’s etiquette. Momose says that in the old days awamori was considered a medicine. It was expensive, so people took is only one small cut each day. “We will consider a slogan ‘not too much, but a little each time’ as our guideline for our etiquette,” Momose explains. |
