Futenma noise complaints now include fuzzy television

Date Posted: 2011-08-12

Complaints being lodged with Ginowan City about noise caused by U.S. military aircraft taking off from Futenma Marine Corps Air Station have extended to a new dimension of interfering with digital terrestrial broadcast reception.

Officials say they received 62 such complaints during July and the first four days of August, during the transition from analog to digital television reception on Okinawa and across Japan. Complaints about reception problems were significant. Ginowan City officials say they’ve received 185 registered noise complaints thus far this year, compared with only 135 for all of 2010.

Complaint cases came from all areas of Ginowan City, including Isa, Ooyama, Nagata, Kakazu and Ojana. Officials say obstacles that can legitimately interfere with the digital broadcast reception have been confirmed in parts of three areas of Ginowan City—Arashiro, Futenma and Nodake—with impact on some 2,000 households.
