G-Ken Photo Exhibition with Okinawa Island Life

Date Posted: 2011-08-04

A collaborative exhibition of photographer G-Ken and Island Life and Island Guide magazine will take place from Aug. 3 through Sep. 5 at Café Unizon in Ginowan City

To get the exhibition off to a flying start, G-Ken will host an exciting reception party at Cafe Unizon this Friday evening featuring special live performances from artists and dancers whose photos have previously appeared in the pages of Island Life. The line up starring Keith Gordon of Ryukyu Underground includes singer and sanshin player Byron Jones, belly dancer Shaw Anze, samba dancer Yoko, and rollerskate derby girls Kokeshi Roller Dolls.

Keith started performing soul, funk, early Chicago house and disco classics in his home country of the U.K. when he was only 14 years old. Going on to play in the clubs in Ibiza and Denmark, he is now a well-known Okinawa-based producer.

The doors open at 7 p.m. with the party taking off at 8:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. The entrance fee of ¥1,500 gets you a free drink at the bar, and the first 100 guests will also receive a coupon for a free mini-bottle of the new Brazilian party drink, Catuma. This is a sparkling wine infused with stimulating Amazonian plant and herb extracts valued by the native tribes for their invigorating effects. You can redeem your free bottle by presenting your coupon at Cafe Unizon anytime before the exhibition ends on September 5th.

Cafe Unizon is located near Tortilla Factory about halfway along Route 81 south of Camp Foster. Guests arriving by car should use the Futenma Shimin Chushajo (Futenma Citizen’s Parking Lot, ¥200 up to 2:00 a.m.). There will be a free shuttle service between the parking lot and Cafe Unizon. More about the exhibition venue is at www.cafe-unizon.jp .

Although a typhoon is expected, the party will go ahead regardless. The performers' show will run for just 2 to 3 hours so come on down and enjoy the spectacle while sipping on delicious Catuma!
