Japanese men living longer; women slip

Date Posted: 2011-08-04

The life expectancy of Japanese men has hit a new high for a fifth consecutive year, moving the nation to fourth in global rankings.

Japanese men are now living an average of 79.64 years, up 0.05 year from 2009, the same margin longer that Japanese women slipped last year. Japanese women dropped slightly, but still retain the world’s best ranking for longevity. Japanese women suffered their first decline in five years, down to 86.39 years, but remain higher than Hong Kong women who live 85.9 years, and French women who live 84.8 years.

Japanese men are living longer, but still are well behind Hong Kong men who live to 80 years, while Swiss men are close behind at 79.8 years and Israeli men third at 79.7 years.
