Battle coming for 'Strongest Man' title

Date Posted: 2011-08-04

The Strongest Man in Okinawa is about to be unveiled as fighters enter the ring on August 28th to battle for the title.

It’s Super Fight, the largest martial arts event on the island. Kickboxing and MMA pro rules apply as Okinawan, American and Japanese fighters do battle in the Tenkaichi Super Fight, one of the largest martial arts events on the island. It’s also a General Mobilization event, the largest kickboxing and MMA event with competition at the highest level in Okinawa. All in all, it’s a bout to decide who’s the strongest man in Okinawa.

Anyone with confidence in himself can enter to participate in the event. A person who trains at a gym, or those who train themselves outside any gym, and persons with one-on-one fight training experience in the military, are going to meet and fight regardless of national origin, pitting Okinawan, American and Japanese as competitors.

Tenkaichi is classified in six divisions, and rankings are changed after eac match results are posted. Strong fighters from Japan, and even from outside the country, will come to Okinawa, and they will do battle with Okinawan champions and high-ranking fighters.

Preliminary matches take place starting at 4 p.m., before the Super Fight. The challenge matches are an amateur event that uses gloves bigger than those used in the Super Fight. No knees to the face are allowed, and the rounds are shorter for the fighter’s safety. These fights are the beginning steps for those wanting to test their training and eventually fight in the Super Fight.

Tickets are available at WildSeaSar, at the Camp Foster, Hansen and Kadena BX Mail Centers and at Okinawa Market on Shuo Park Avenue. General seating tickets are ¥4,500, and the best Super Ringside Seats are ¥5,500. Information in English is available Monday through Friday 6 p.m. ~ 9:30 p.m. at (098) 926-1114, or by e-mail at tenka926@yahoo.co.jp.
