An unexploded shell gets attention in Urasoe City

Date Posted: 2011-08-04

A call to the police emergency number 110 with a report “there is an unexploded shell in this site” at Takushi 1-chome in Urasoe City sent officials into high gear.

The 9:20 a.m. call brought Ground Self Defense Forces Unexploded Shell Disposal Unit to the scene in a matter of minutes on July 25th. The specially trained technicians quickly made an emergency collection of the unexploded shell within an hour of arrival on the scene. Urasoe City Police say the unexploded shell was a 105mm cannon shell made in the United States. The shell was described as 40cm long and 10cm in diameter, with the fuse still inside.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers say that there was no risk of an explosion, despite the fuse being with the shell. No evacuation of residents was ordered, and there were no injuries.
