Youngster drowns during school-sponsored beach party

Date Posted: 2011-08-04

An elementary school student participating in a beach party sponsored by her school’s badminton club at Aguni Island’s Ugu Beach drowned during the event last weekend.

Officials say the second grade student, Marina Tomoyose, was swimming some 40 meters away from the beach Saturday afternoon when she went underwater. She was one of about 30 members of the school badminton club at the island for the party. When an adult heard one of Tomoyose’s friend’s cries for help, he discovered the student floating in about one-meter-deep water.

She was pulled from the water and taken first to a local clinic on Aguni Island, and then by helicopter to a hospital on Okinawa’s main island. The girl was pronounced dead several hours after the incident. Naha City Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
