Seasonís first whales spotted off Zamami

Date Posted: 2002-12-21

The first sighting of humpback whales in the waters off Zamami Island was reported Saturday when dive shop owner Yasuo Miyahira observed one from Zamami Whale Watching Association watchtower. The annual migration of humpbacks is an important source of tourist dollars to Zamami as ever increasing number of people come to see the mighty animals in their natural environment.

The annual whale-watching season stretches from Secember through end of March when they migrate back to colder waters in the north. Tens and sometimes even hundreds of whales come to the area to nurse their calves, and local tour agencies and boat operators have found organizing whale watching tours to be a lucrative business.
